Use CData Connect Cloud and datapine to build visualizations and dashboards with access to live ADP data.
datapine is a browser-based business intelligence platform. When paired with the CData Connect Cloud, you get access to your ADP data directly from your datapine visualizations and dashboards. This article describes connecting to ADP in CData Connect Cloud and building a simple ADP-connected visualization in datapine.
CData Connect Cloud provides a pure SQL Server interface for ADP, allowing you to query data from ADP without replicating the data to a natively supported database. Using optimized data processing out of the box, CData Connect Cloud pushes all supported SQL operations (filters, JOINs, etc.) directly to ADP, leveraging server-side processing to return the requested ADP data quickly.
Configure ADP Connectivity for datapine
Connectivity to ADP from datapine is made possible through CData Connect Cloud. To work with ADP data from datapine, we start by creating and configuring a ADP connection.
- Log into Connect Cloud, click Sources, and then click Add Connection
- Select "ADP" from the Add Connection panel
-
Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to ADP.
Connect to ADP by specifying the following properties:
- OAuthClientId: The client Id of the custom OAuth application you obtained from ADP.
- OAuthClientSecret: The custom OAuth application's client secret.
- SSLClientCert: Set this to the certificate provided during registration.
- SSLClientCertPassword: Set this to the password of the certificate.
- UseUAT: The connector makes requests to the production environment by default. If using a developer account, set UseUAT = true.
- RowScanDepth: The maximum number of rows to scan for the custom fields columns available in the table. The default value will be set to 100. Setting a high value may decrease performance.
The connector uses OAuth to authenticate with ADP. OAuth requires the authenticating user to interact with ADP using the browser. OAuth access can be configured in ADP through ADP API Central. For more information, refer ADP's API Central Quick Start Guide and the OAuth section in CData's Help documentation.
- Click Create & Test
-
Navigate to the Permissions tab in the Add ADP Connection page and update the User-based permissions.
Add a Personal Access Token
When connecting to Connect Cloud through the REST API, the OData API, or the Virtual SQL Server, a Personal Access Token (PAT) is used to authenticate the connection to Connect Cloud. It is best practice to create a separate PAT for each service to maintain granularity of access.
- Click on the Gear icon () at the top right of the Connect Cloud app to open the settings page.
- On the Settings page, go to the Access Tokens section and click Create PAT.
-
Give the PAT a name and click Create.
- The personal access token is only visible at creation, so be sure to copy it and store it securely for future use.
With the connection configured and a PAT generated, you are ready to connect to ADP data from datapine.
Connecting to ADP from datapine
Once you configure your connection to ADP in Connect Cloud, you are ready to connect to ADP from datapine.
- Log into datapine
- Click Connect to navigate to the "Connect" page
- Select MS SQL Server as the data source
- In the Integration step, fill in the connection properties and click "Save and Proceed"
- Set the Internal Name
- Set Database Name to the name of the connection we just configured (e.g. ADP1)
- Set Host / IP to "tds.cdata.com"
- Set Username to your Connect Cloud username (e.g. [email protected])
- Set Password to the corresponding PAT
- Set Database Port to "14333"
- In the Data Schema step, select the tables and fields to visualize and click "Save and Proceed"
- In the References step, define any relationships between your selected tables and click "Save and Proceed"
- In the Data Transfer step, click "Go to Analyzer"
